In case you didn’t know, as a South African passport holder, you need a visa in order to visit the United States of America. The US Embassy recommends that South African residents should apply at least 3 months before the date of travel, due to the increased volume of applicants. With the scarcity of visa application interview slots around US Consulates in South Africa this has meant that many potential visitors to the USA are flocking to Cape Town to complete their visa application process.
Wondering where to start? Save this handy guide for everything you need to know about visiting Cape Town and the American Consulate to apply for your US visa.
The Muize Bed and Breakfast is a beautifully restored beach house in Muizenberg conveniently located within a 15 minute drive to the U.S Consulate in Westlake, just 8km away. It is the accommodation of choice for many leisure and business travellers, located just across the beach and mountains of Muizenberg, as we help our guests with all aspects of their visit, from airport transfers to day trips and tours.
Here’s what you need to consider when traveling down to Cape Town for your US Visa application.
1. Planning your trip:
The U.S visa application appointment can be a stressful thing for a lot of people, so we recommend giving yourself plenty of time. Many of our guests prefer to plan a 2 night stay in Cape Town before their embassy appointment, which gives them a free day before the appointment to make sure they have everything in order. Giving yourself time to tackle last minute paperwork printing, re-doing I.D. photos that you may have lost, or just figuring out where the embassy is will put your mind at ease. Best of all you get a day in Cape Town to explore one of the world's most beautiful cities. If you need help with planning a day off in Cape Town, let us know, we are more than happy to help. One of the Cape’s best wine farms is directly opposite the US Consulate, it would be a waste not to take time to enjoy Steenberg Wine Farm and the exceptional wines there.
2. Getting to Cape Town:
Many of our guests fly to Cape Town International Airport, and find it most convenient to catch one of the later flights, that typically land around 9:30pm. Be wary of this, as most Guest Houses close their check-in early, and do not permit late check-ins, so be sure the establishment knows what time you are arriving. At the Muize we make special allowances to receive late check-in guests for the American Consulate.
For those driving to Cape Town, be aware of the traffic. Traffic peak times in the Muizenberg area are from 4:00pm - 6:00pm in the evenings and 6:30am - 8:30am in the mornings, so plan around these peak times to avoid frustration. Traffic can mount up quickly and we have had guests who have added an hour to their travel times as a result. Once you’re settled at your accommodation in Muizenberg, don’t be too concerned about travel time to the Consulate in the morning; at the worst, it will take you 30 minutes in a taxi or by car to get there.
3. Where to Stay:
Obviously we want you to stay with us, but there are a few options that we can recommend in the area too. Whale Watchers Self Catering Holidays offers self-catering apartments in the area, and require a minimum of 2 nights stay; perfect to enjoy a day to relax. The team there will also help with any paperwork printing if needed. Contact them on 0217882829 or visit www.whalewatchers.co.za.
Muizenberg Guestique in the heart of the village is another local favourite and offers large suites for travelling families. You can book with them directly through www.guestique.com. Bella Ev Guest House is an Ottoman inspired experience and is also perfectly located within Muizenberg (www.bellaev.co.za), and they also require a minimum of 2 nights booking.
4. Getting Around:
Most of our guests prefer to hire a car when they come to Cape Town, and pick the car up from the airport. This gives you maximum flexibility and freedom during your stay. Be sure to choose accommodation with secure off-street parking, exactly like what we offer at the Muize. We recommend local website, Just Car Hire, and you can book directly here: https://www.justcarhire.co.za/?link_aUID=MuizTravel. This provides the most up-to-date price comparison of all the major car hire companies with easy collection and drop-off at the airport.
Alternatively, some guests prefer to book an Airport Transfer. The Muize B&B provides this convenient service through our sister company Muizenberg Tours and Travel. If you require an airport transfer, just let us know during your booking, and we will arrange everything for you. Prices start from R450 per trip.
If you’d like someone else to take care of your travel, book a package deal with us. This includes your airport collection, return transfer to the U.S. Consulate, and return trip to the Airport. This round trip starts from R900, and you have a dedicated driver for your trips, who is also a qualified tour guide. Bonus!
You can also use services like UBER or BOLT to get around.
5. Getting to the Embassy:
Address: 2 Reddam Avenue, Westlake, 7945
Telephone: 021 702 7300
Business Hours: Monday to Friday, 08:00 - 16:45
Google map link to the Consulate: https://goo.gl/maps/87mJQUGnofxBuXTe8
We recommend allowing 30 minutes to get to the American Consulate in the morning so that you arrive relaxed and in time. If you are travelling at peak times (7am to 8am) then give yourself an extra 10 minutes, just to be safe. You can self-drive or you can use one of the transfer services available.
Very important to know, you cannot park at the Embassy! It is a requirement of the American Consulate that you park at the Steenberg Village Shopping Centre. It's a short walk to the Embassy from here (500m) and there is plenty of parking available. There are also some great little shops to explore if you have time before or after.
Take a look at this Google Map link to get familiar with the area:
6. Be prepared:
Most people who have had issues with their interviews have been a result of paperwork not being in order. Be sure to have absolutely everything in order. Double and triple check!
Security: the embassy has very tight security measures and everyone goes through the security screening process, this is relatively quick, and does not impact on your appointment time. However, we recommend not having excess luggage with you (for those planning to head to the airport afterwards). Rather leave these at your guest house, or with your driver or in your car if you have one.
Relax: the interview is about you, and your reason for travelling to the states. You should have nothing to fear if your paperwork is in order, and your reasons for travel are legitimate. It is not an interrogation!

Our gift to travellers (and Cape Town) this Christmas is being able to provide our guests with holiday accommodation that is 100% water secure. A custom designed water treatment plant now ensures that guests have guilt free access to water while on their vacation in Cape Town. Incorporating an ingenious design philosophy, the Muize has replicated a wetland and river system, that takes groundwater and turns it into usable water for the guesthouse. The Muize BnB is now producing 98% of its own water, and guests are thrilled.
Within the first stage, the system circulates water through a series of tank chambers that enable the settling of deposits, while simultaneously aerating the water through inbuilt flow channels. The natural UV of the sun provides additional sterilization while wetland plants are used as a medium of bio-filtration.
The second stage, sees the water being drawn from the wetland simulator and then pumped through a series of fine mesh and carbon filters, while finally being passed through a UV sterilization unit and then stored for use within the guesthouse.
The Muize BnB is located very close to a natural wetland area and virtually accross the road from the beach. The groundwater is slightly salty to the taste, hence the reason for this design philosophy. "While our water system is perfectly filtering and cleaning groundwater for household use, we eventually we want to be able to test the system to recycle grey water through the wetland simulator" says owner and designer, Daniel Blaauw, who worked as an engineer in the oil and gas industry before taking a step into the guesthouse industry. The natural bio-filtration that wetlands offer is exceptional and there is loads of information online on how biofiltration works to improve the quality of water and even grey water.
For now, The Muize Bed and Breakfast has shut off its valves to municipal water, and guests are enjoying impact free water usage while on holiday in Cape Town. So if the water crisis is deterring you from your trip to one of the world's most popular tourism destinations, then don't. The Muize Bed and Breakfast has ensured your water security for the holiday season.

In May this year The Muize Bed and Breakfast was placed in the running for the 2017 Sanlam Top Destination awards as brought to you by Discount Traveller magazine. Not bad after only being open for 8 months we thought. However, we thought it would be just one of those typical marketing ploys or something. We went with it anyway and posted our voting link on Facebook and thought that would be the end of it. Little did we know!
The Sanlam Top Destination Award is a national competition that is setup to recognise the best in the hospitality industry. From 5 star luxury hotels and game lodges, to backpackers and self catering. It's the public that votes and the public that recognises what you have done right. Boy did I underestimate what this event was all about, and was I very underprepared for what the evening had in store for us.
"Congratulations, The Muize has been voted by the Public as a finalist in the Sanlam Top Destination Awards 2017 "- was the message we received sometime in August. We decided to attend and see what this thing was all about. You have to get out of Muizenberg and get dressed up every once in awhile, right? A fantastic evening was laid out for us at Kelvin Grove and everyone that attended looked exceptional. Especially myself and the lovely Janine ;)
From product stalls to gift bags that were fulled to the brim of relevant freebies. To prizes ranging for expensive David Green watches (of which I am now the proud owner of one) to Volkswagen Carravels. This was a red carpet affair.
The evening is really a celebration of the hospitality industry and what it does for the South African tourism industry and the greater South African economy. Tourism is a fundamental industry for our country and hospitality is the face that South Africa wears to its foreign guests. We not only represent our businesses, but we represent the diverse cultures of our country. No pressure! To be recognised as a top performer within this sector is an absolute honour.
It was a great celebration and a great night out, and we definitely look forward to competing for the top spot again next year. Thanks to my Muize family who have been the reason we are doing so well at what we do. And thank you to our guests most of all, who make each day interesting and full of fun. We love our town, we love our city, we love our country and we love sharing it with you.
Be sure to look out for us again next year.
Daniel, Meg, Adrian and Gemma

Wow, what an amazing past weekend this proved to be. Action packed and full of some of the worlds most interesting people. From meeting Bruno the South African world champ paraplegic surfer, to meeting Nymo and Dan Shout the legendary jazz musicians, to even meeting up with Spiderman and other heroes at FanCon in Cape Town.. those aren't even the best parts... the best part being the release of the new Gabrielskloof Rosebud Rose 2016 vintage... OMG... this stuff is the most delicious wine i have tasted in a long time.... Summer in Cape Town is going to be EPIC!
On Friday 6th May, Ta-Da Creperie on Muizenberg beach hosted Bruno and a screening of his documentary DEVOCEAN. South African surfer Bruno spent his life in or on the water, but in 1998, a car accident left him paraplegic. As a laid back but dynamically active surf guide, sailor, scuba diver and traveller, he plumbed the depths of despair. However, a chance wave and the restorative powers of the ocean showed Bruno a new path, one that would be rich, full, diverse and salty. This is his journey back to the ocean. The movie is inspirational and Bruno a true hero in overcoming adversity. Its was really phenomenal to meet him. Big thanks to Alex from Ta-Da who put the amazing evening together.
On Saturday 7th May, The Casa Labia in Muizenberg hosted four amazing jazz musicians as they kicked off the Frodo Nymo and Dan Shout South African Tour. Dan and Frodo delivered some amazing sax solos showcasing their depth of talent. One of the highlights was the ever gorgeous Romy Brauteseth laying down the base with her flawless intimate execution and of course Kevin Gibson on the drums whose reputation as one of the words drumming greats is fast growing. It was a fantastic experience and set within the cultural center that is the Casa Labia, quite surreal and special.
On Sunday 8th May, we got a chance to visit the FanCon Comic Convention in the Waterfront. While not the size of the conventions elsewhere in the world, we were no shortage of outrageous costumes and great things to see. The highlight was definitely the array of local comic publications that are just superbly awesome. The best of these being a new comic called "Super Dud" produced entirely by Jarred Cramer a local cartoonist. This comic tells the life of Parker Peters the most inept superhero in Cape Town. From villains like VuvuZ (who blasts deafening vuvuzela horns from his wrists) to Die Biltong Boer and his minions of droewors creatures... the tale is hilarious and the content is entirely original. Definitely something worth reading and supporting. For more information check out the following links.
Its official.... the greatest Saxonphonist of all time is going to be playing at the Casa Labia in Muizenberg, Cape Town. He has played for royalty around the world and is now putting a set together with the legendary Frode Nymo from Norway. These two heavyweights of the jazz world are not to be missed. Dan Shout is most famously known for his seven years spent on the road with Jonny Clegg. An awesome musician and a great ambassador of South Africa (even though he claims to be from Namibia) this musical master will no doubt send the Norwegian running for the fjords in any battle of the horns. Dan Shout has played at every major jazz festival internationally and is truly a talent that Cape Town can be proud of. Make sure to follow him on facebook and youtube and checkout his website....
