Recently we were proud to take a few groups on some amazing tours in the Stellenbosch and Constantia wine regions. The combination of the beautiful surroundings, the great weather, the unique architecture and of course the amazing wines culminate in a truly memorable experience for everyone. We really hope to be able to bring the enjoyment of South African wines to more people from around the world.
Stellenbosch Wine Tour
Our beautiful group from Belgium were keen to try some of the Stellenbosch region wines. Filled with excitement we set out to explore some great wine estates. Special thanks to the ladies Tine, Melissa, Evi and Imogen for a fun filled and very entertaining day in Stellenbosch. We really look forward to some more wine filled experiences with all of you.
Great place to start any wine tour is any place with a good bubbly. Blaauwklippen with their "Onssprankel" bubbly is a great place to start. Meaning "Our Shine" it is a great tasting start to the day. May of their wines are made from the Zinfandel vine, and it really brings about some unique flavors, that are not typical to Southern African wines, but are definitely worth tasting. Unique wines and a great setting and over 300 years of wine making history makes Blaauwklippen a must. You can also try their nobel wines as a treat or even some of the brandies they make.
Set further back against the mountains of Stellenbosch, this family owned and run wine farm produces some fine wines indeed. Their flagship Donatus wines are a real treat, and perfect examples of what can be achieved when combining passion and superb vine selections.
Vergenoegd is home to a selection of very easy drinking wines that are light on the pallet after a day spent wine tasting. The perfect way to spend time in the sun, watching the renowned procession of the ducks, while enjoying a cool and light sauvignon blanc or chardonnay. Their wines are popular additions to any picnic basket. A great place to unwind after a long day.
Constantia Wine Tour
No tour of the wine lands is complete without a tour of the famous constantia wine farms. Set against the backdrop of the Table Mountain Nature Reserve, these wines have some unique characteristics compared to the Stellenbosch or Franchoek wines. Impacted by the cooler breezes from the ocean results in the vines growing under cooler conditions. This manifests itself in slightly more complex wines with higher tannins and a richer flavor. Thank you to Gary from the USA and our special locals Craig and Michelle for an amazing day.
One of the oldest registered farms in Cape Town (not originally farming grapes though) set against the backdrop of what was originally known as the Stone Mountains (or Steenberg in Afrikaans) this beautiful and popular wine farm is home to some really great wines. Their Pinot Noir MCC is an absolutely superb bubbly and a great start to any day spent wine tasting. Also the home of the Nebbiolo vine (originally from Italy) and a great Bordeaux style blend in their flagship Catharina. Also be sure to try their Black Swan sauvignon blanc, a truly great example of the local terroir.
Set within a forest this non traditional wine farm setting is very unique and very popular. Children and pet friendly, this place is popular with the locals and is home to some award winning wines also. Be sure to try out their delicious picnic boards and spend the afternoon relaxing in the sun. Their Viognier and award winning Shiraz are particularly spectacular.
Set high up on the Constantia mountains, this spectacular wine estate boasts some amazing views in the region. Beautiful vineyards set against a mountain backdrop really makes this a great place to relax and enjoy their unique blends of wines that has made Constantia Glen wines a favorite on the dinner tables.
